Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is the most common
vector borne disease in the United States.
Many patients with chronic Lyme
disease have had the experience of dealing with physicians,
family members, and friends who did not believe there was a
real disease behind all their symptoms.
Lyme disease is characterized by
more than just an infection with Borrelia bugdorferi. It is a
constantly morphing parasite that can evade the human immune
system in many ways. It can change its outer protein coat. It
can become an immune-neutral cyst. It can precipitate a
Jarish-Herxheimer reaction. It is famous for co-existing with
many other infecting organisms. Autoimmunity plays a
significant role in the persistence of symptoms as well.
Laboratory tests include a myriad
of esoteric and poorly sensitive studies that are notoriously
difficult to obtain and interpret on a consistent basis. Most
are also very expensive. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention) states that the diagnosis of Lyme Disease
should not be based on a test result but on the clinical
impression of the healthcare provider.
The mainstay of treatment options
currently employs multiple antibiotic regimens often used
“off-label”. In dealing with a disease that is poorly
understood many other modalities may be incorporated. Some of
these treatment programs include nontraditional and
non-Western complimentary medicine.
We do not represent this practice
as possessing a cure for Lyme Disease. We are Lyme aware. We
listen. We work with our patients as individual human beings.
We present all treatment options within our experience and
those that are being evaluated in the Lyme community.
